Bassirou Diomaye Faye takes up the mantle of leadership as Senegal's fifth and youngest president. The once-jailed opposition leader took the oath of office on Tuesday, pledging to advance economic development and ensure a stable polity. He also began his new assignment by appointing Ousmane Sonko, an opponent of former President Macky Sall, as prime minister. Sonko was not allowed to participate in the March 24 presidential election due to a defamation conviction. Sonko, however, denied the allegation.
